I have a large lists of books to read for 2016. I am always reading a book. I love participating in my book club and am always in the middle of a fiction book. Lately I have been diving more into professional books. I keep thinking back to one professional book I read in the past and wanted to share it with you!
During the 2013 – 2014 school year I was earning my Masters in School Leadership and had to complete a year long internship with my principal. One of the projects I worked on was implementing a professional book club with teachers. My fellow intern and I organized for our principal to purchase lunch for all teachers willing to participate. It was perfect to sit down with colleagues and discuss good books over good food.
The second book that we read was Teach Like a Pirate by Dave Burgess. I am sure that you have heard of it. It is as amazing as everyone says! The book was incredibly inspiring to both myself and my colleagues. Reading it wasn’t the best part though…
I am pretty active on Twitter and tweeted out that we were studying the book the day before. I was so excited when I got a direct message from Dave Burgess himself!
I was thrilled that he would tweet along with us! I knew the staff would be pumped also. The day of the book club came and my friend ran the first lunch (for our upper school teachers.) I asked her if Dave tweeted with them and she said no. We figured he must have gotten busy. I was still hopeful that he would tweet with us though. We started the book club and about five minutes in my principal walked in with someone we did not recognize. Upon closer inspection we realized it was DAVE BURGESS HIMSELF! We were all shocked! Turns out he was in town working with another district and saw my tweet. He looked up how far we were from the school he was at and arranged with my principal to come and surprise us. Amazing, right?! It was completely unforgettable. Completely Teaching Like a Pirate!
Moral of the blog post? I recommend reading Teach Like a Pirate!
