One tradition that I have with St Patrick’s Day is reading The Night Before St Patrick’s Day by Natasha Wing. My kids LOVE all of her “Night Before” books and they come to expect me to read them during the holidays. This one is as cute as the others. The rhythm and rhyme of the book flows so well – almost like a song. The brother and sister characters in the book – Tim and Maureen – spend the night before the holiday decorating their house in green and laying trips for leprechauns. When they wake up in the morning they are surprised to find that a leprechaun left a terrible mess in their bedroom! They were able to trap him with one of their traps though and he tells them about a treasure he buried…it is another trick though! ; ) If you would like to WIN a copy of this book for yourself enter below!

I am sure you are just imagining all the possibilities this book brings with discussion in both the classroom and at home. Not to mention all of the fun that you could have with creating and setting traps! I had another use for the book in my classroom in addition to these – to work on rhyming! I recently noticed that my friends were not able to rhyme as well as I thought they could. Therefore – I created a rhyming activity using their favorite thing – QR codes! My kids loved going on a scavenger hunt for QR codes so much – they didn’t realize they were working on a skill!
